TREATY 1 TERRITORY, Winnipeg, Man. – Welcome the summer solstice and National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD) with APTN Indigenous Day Live 2022 (IDL). For the first time since 2019, this year’s free event marks the return to an in-person celebration at The Forks in Winnipeg, Man., on Saturday, June 18.
New this year, IDL is being reimagined from a traditionally-hosted concert to a cultural and artistic presentation that shines a light on this year’s theme, “Celebrating Our Lands.” The show celebrates gender diversity and the important connection Indigenous women have to the land. Each act is led by an Indigenous woman or member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
IDL 2022 will broadcast on APTN, AMI-tv, on participating Indigenous radio stations and livestreamed on APTN’s YouTube channel for audiences from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
“We are so excited to present this new adaptation of APTN Indigenous Day Live,” said APTN CEO Monika Ille. “This year’s theme will emphasize the important relationship between ourselves and our lands. The lands sustain our spirits and bodies and this event is an opportunity for us to express gratitude to our lands for taking such good care of our Peoples.”
Pre-show celebrations at The Forks will begin at 6 p.m. CT. Catch artisans, food vendors, a Métis fiddle competition and more. IDL 2022 will kick off on the main stage at 9 p.m. CT. The two-hour show will feature an exciting medley of artistic and cultural collaborations never-before-seen on the IDL stage.
Generous financial support from the Government of Canada has enabled APTN Indigenous Day Live to bring communities together in celebration of NIPD.
“The Government of Canada reaffirms its commitment to Indigenous Peoples and reconciliation by supporting important projects like APTN Indigenous Day Live 2022,” said the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Quebec Lieutenant, Pablo Rodriguez. “I encourage everyone across the country to use this day as an opportunity to learn, and to take part and recognize this celebration of Indigenous cultures and heritage.”

During the show, IDL 2022 will incorporate vignettes that demonstrate the strong ties between Indigenous communities and their lands. These vignettes will showcase Canada through the lens of Indigenous Peoples, building on their diverse experiences, voices and perspectives.

ABOUT NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY
National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding achievements and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. National Aboriginal Day, as it was named at the time, was first celebrated on June 21, 1996, after being recognized through a proclamation by then Governor General Roméo LeBlanc.
On June 21, 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement announcing the government’s intention to rename National Aboriginal Day to National Indigenous Peoples Day. National Indigenous Peoples Day is part of Celebrate Canada days, although most provinces do not recognize it as a statutory holiday.
