Winnipeg’s own DJ Harry Chan returns for a great cause!

(Media Release)
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

On Saturday, December 8th beginning at 9 PM the legendary Winnipeg DJ, Harry Chan will return to play in Winnipeg for one very special night. “Factory Reset” – an evening of classic 1990′s underground house music will take place at the Pyramid Cabaret at 176 Fort Street. Tickets are only $12 and all of the proceeds of the event will be donated to the Aboriginal Arts Training & Mentorship Program.

What started as a small 40th birthday party by long-time friends and organizers Adam Nixon and Kim Hunter quickly became an opportunity to “have the party we wanted to go to with the DJ we wanted to hear, and raise some much needed funds for an incredible organization”. Organizers were made aware of the dire need for funding for the organization by a Facebook post seeking community support written by Aboriginal Arts Training & Mentorship Program director Columpa Bobb.

The Aboriginal Arts Training & Mentorship Program is an empowerment through the arts theatre based training program that houses over 500 Aboriginal students annually. Aboriginal youth participants are engaged in an ongoing process of reclamation of authentic self. They learn how to let go of the negative stereotypes that plague their lives. They learn to reclaim power, confidence and trust in self. They learn to create not from fear of being invisible but from the great love that allows them to openly share their experiences with the world around them.

On Saturday December 8th, 2012 please come out and join us for a great party for an even better cause! DJ Harry Chan has not played Winnipeg in a decade – this will be a legendary night, and every cent of the profits will go to support Winnipeg’s Aboriginal youth in the Aboriginal Arts Training & Mentorship Program.

For more information about Factory Reset please contact us at factoryresetywg2012@gmail.com or visit our Facebook page.

ABOUT DON AMERO
www.donamero.com

You can call Winnipeg’s Don Amero one of the hardest working independent musicians in showbiz today. Since leaving his job as a hardwood flooring installer five years ago to pursue music fulltime, the singer/songwriter has toured coast-to-coast, headlined concerts, presented at festivals, performed with the symphony, and played national television.

Don’s musical style has been likened to John-Mayer-meets-Keith-Urban. His three albums (Change Your Life, Deepening, The Long Way Home) have generated six national and international awards – Male Entertainer of the Year (2012 Aboriginal People Choice Music Awards), Best Country Song (2012 Indian Summer Music Awards), Aboriginal Recording of the Year (2011 Western Canadian Music Awards), Best Folk Recording (2011 Native American Music Awards), Aboriginal Songwriter of the Year (2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards), Male Artist of the Year (2009 Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards) – and 20 more nominations.

Heart On My Sleeve is Don’s fourth album. A self-produced labour of love, he proudly calls it his most personal album to date. If you listen from beginning to end, it tells a story. Heart On My Sleeve was released in October 2012 at an “intimate and international” house concert streamed live on APTN.ca. You can still view the concert here: www.aptn.ca/webstagepass.

On radio, Don has seen four songs climb to #1 on the National Aboriginal Countdown. Two tracks – Turn These Grey Skies Blue and original holiday song All I Need This Christmas – earned notable “most active download” designations on DMDS.com, and were spun on commercial stations across Canada.

Don Amero captivates audiences of all ages with his powerful melodious vocals, percussion-style guitar play, and engaging storytelling. He is often called upon as a keynote speaker, and to deliver workshops for youth. His story inspires, and his message is one of encouragement, positivity and beauty. He continues to impress wherever he goes.

Mohawk Girls

APTN and OMNI Television announced today the green lighting of new co-production, Mohawk Girls. Produced by Montreal-based Rezolution Pictures, the six episode, 30-minute ‘dramedy’ series is slated to start production spring 2013 in the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, in Quebec. In addition to its English broadcasts on both networks, the series will also air in Mohawk on APTN and in Mandarin on OMNI Television. Further production and broadcast details will be announced at a later date.

Mohawk Girls is a half-hour ‘dramedy’ about four, sexy, twentysomethings trying to figure out what it means to be a modern day Mohawk woman. But with their parents, friends, and community having an opinion on how they should live their lives, it seems like an impossible task.

The cast features Glen Gould (Cashing In), Ashley Michaels (Snare), Kaniehtiio Horn (18 to Life) , Kyle Nobess (Todd And The Book Of Pure Evil),and Rachelle White Wind (Moccasin Flats). New Canadian talent Brittany LeBorgne, Heather White, and Maika Harper also join the cast.

“OMNI Television is a strong supporter and contributor of multilingual programming and is proud to share and educate different Canadian, ethno-cultural communities with its original programming,” said Madeline Ziniak National VP of OMNI Television. “Mohawk Girls explores and examines Aboriginal realities and values in a very clever and entertaining way.”

“APTN is proud to partner in this exciting project that provides the opportunity for fresh, new voices that are true to our mission of sharing the stories of Aboriginal Peoples in Canada” said Jean LaRose, CEO of Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. “Mohawk Girls is a fitting example of a youthful perspective and fresh insight into what it means to be a young Aboriginal woman living in the 21st century.”

Created by Gemini Award-winning writer Tracey Deer (Club Native), Mohawk Girls was inspired by Deer’s 2005 acclaimed feature-length documentary of the same name about the trials and tribulations of teenage girls growing up on the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake.

Filmed in 2010, the pilot for Mohawk Girls was selected during the 2010 Cannes Film Festival to be a finalist in the first-ever International Pilots Competition at the Banff World Television Festival.

“From the creator to the cast, this series represents a new wave in Aboriginal talent,” said Rezolution Producer Christina Fon, “The series is about dealing with cultural obligations, social pressures, and deciding who you want to be as an adult. Those issues resonate with people from every ethnicity and background.”

Mohawk Girls is directed by Gemini Award-winning Deer who also serves as executive producer. Cynthia Knight is the series showrunner. Executive producers for Rezolution Pictures are Catherine Bainbridge Christina Fon, Linda Ludwick and Ernest Webb

“I’m really excited to be releasing my new album in such a different and dynamic way,” says Don Amero. “House concerts allow for an intimate performance, and I play a lot of them when I tour. So what better way to release Heart On My Sleeve then through an up-close-and-personal house concert that we can share with people everywhere. In essence, I’m putting my heart on my sleeve for the entire world to see.”

When Don approached APTN with the idea, they loved it and wanted to get on board. “We’re happy to be blazing this trail with Don Amero,” says Sky Bridges, Chief Operating Officer of APTN. “We’re taking the online streaming model we created for Aboriginal Day Live, and applying it to Don’s CD release. We’re really excited by this initiative – the first of its kind for APTN – and happy to get behind a talented independent artist like Don Amero.”

ABOUT THE SELF-PRODUCED HEART ON MY SLEEVE

Heart On My Sleeve is the fourth full-length CD from Winnipeg’s Don Amero, and a fitting title considering its self-produced.

“I feel like this album is different from my previous releases, and in some ways, a brand new start for me,” explains Amero. “While I’ve worked with some amazing producers in the past, I just felt it was time to put more of my voice into the recording.”

So Amero went back to where it all began six years ago, when he self-produced his debut album. He spent much of summer in his own recording studio tucked away in the back of his community church, working diligently to complete the 11 songs and two bonus tracks featured on Heart On My Sleeve.

“My thought has always been that as an artist, you need to evolve and grow. With this recording, I’m very happy with where I’ve come from and where I’m going,” he says. “When I listen to the songs, I feel like I’m being more honest than I’ve ever been before.”

The album’s first single Turn These Grey Skies Blue was released to radio earlier this summer. It became the third most downloaded song on DMDS.com the day it came out, after being listened to and downloaded by Canadian radio programmers from coast-to-coast. Don co-wrote the song with well-known Nashville songwriter Kris Burgsness during a trip to Nashville last year.

Don’s favourite song on the album – and the one he is most proud of – is Young Forever. He was inspired to write it during a flight from Montreal to Moncton, after reading a short story in Air Canada’s magazine that got him thinking about what it means to stay young at heart. He wrote the song while on tour in PEI, spending ten hours over two days painstakingly crafting the meaningful words and memorable melody.

Love Will Find A Way is probably the most personal song on the album. Don wrote it for his brother and sister-in-law after they lost their baby. Since Don isn’t one to express his feelings though conversation, he wrote the song as a way to show his support for what they were going through.

THE HEART ON MY SLEEVE TOUR

Music fans across Canada will have the chance to see Don Amero on tour, leading up to the Heart On My Sleeve house concert in his hometown of Winnipeg:

ABOUT TIGA TALK!

Targeted at children aged 3-5, Tiga Talk! is a gentle, entertaining series that explores languages and culture in a fun way. It’s about Tiga, a stuffed toy wolf cub who lives with Jodie and Jason, their father, and Kokum (grandmother). Tiga lives in a backyard den the children made for him, and together, they share a secret. When there aren’t any adults around, Tiga becomes a talking puppet who plays with Jodie, Jason, and children in the audience. Tiga’s sidekicks Gertie the Gopher and Gavin the Goose also ‘come alive’ to join in the fun.

Tiga Talk! not only captivates and entertains its preschool audience, but also creates an ear for different languages and encourages an excitement for learning during these very important early years. Music and activities are featured in half-hour episodes combining live action with a magic puppet world. Games, crafts, and adventures on the interactive website and mobile applications provide even greater opportunities to play and learn.

INNOVATIVE ‘ADVENTURE STORY’ APP

Since first launching last season, the award-winning Tiga Talk! Speech Therapy Games iPhone app has been a huge success, and continues to sell to fans of the series, as well as families seeking speech language tools. Now, a brand new innovative app will engage children in a new way, beyond anything seen so far with Tiga Talk! or other phonetic learning programs.

The new Tiga Talk! Adventure Story App appeals to the passion for exploration by taking the child on a self-led adventure. It encourages language development skills and creative problem solving by offering different experiences and options, providing the opportunity to learn new words in English and Cree. Co-created by award-winning digital media studio Tactica Interactive, the app is modeled after interactive storybooks, ‘choose your own adventure’ stories, and role playing games.

ABOUT SEASON 4

Season 4 finds Jodie and Jason having more backyard adventures with Tiga, Gertie and Gavin. Through their interactions and adventures, the puppets, kids and audience learn about traditional Aboriginal practices, cultures and languages in imaginative ways.

Each of the 11 new episodes in Season 4 features a theme and a problem to solve, such as:

Everyone would like a pet but how do you care for it?

Laughter is infectious but can sometimes hurt people’s feelings.

Tiga has hiccups and they won’t go away!

Moving to a new home can be exciting – but scary as well.

Themes are explored through games and adventures in the backyard, and at on-location cultural activities. This season, the children visit the Big House in Comox to see a dance performance, tour the studios of local artists John Marsden and Carey Newman, and meet local Medicine Woman Della Rice Sylvester.

Children will also learn new words related to each theme, be entertained by stories, and sing along to catchy songs by animated friend Ribbit the Rapper. Rounding out the fun are ‘Get Moving’ segments, designed to encourage audience members to participate in physical activity.

VIEWERS WILL CHOOSE PET NAME

Early in Season 4, viewers will be prompted to visit www.tigatalk.com and asked to contribute to an interactive storyline surrounding Jodie and Jason’s friends. Kyle and Tessa will be getting a new pet, and viewers will be able to go online and vote for the pet’s name. The name that receives the most votes will become the actual name of the pet.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

Tiga Talk! was developed by an award-winning children’s television producer, an early childhood educator and a speech pathologist. Irene Green is a producer and writer for the series, and also plays ‘Kokum’. Singer/songwriter/actor Art Napoleon plays ‘Dad’, and is a cultural/language consultant. Kate-La Faith Hanuse returns as ‘Jodie’, and Gabriel Paul reprises the role of ‘Jason’.Hilary Pryor wears multiple hats as executive producer, producer, writer, director and editor, andVanessa Loewen is executive producer.

Cozy up to Cameron Diaz every Sunday night in September on APTN because There’s Something About Sundays all month long.

It’s no secret that Cameron Diaz is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood, and perhaps that’s because she’s one of many Hollywood icons with some Native American ancestry! Cameron is of Cuban American, English, German and Cherokee descent. She joins the likes of Kevin Costner, Johnny Depp, Chuck Norris and Lou Diamond Phillips with Cherokee ancestry which is why you’ll see those big names in several of APTN’s movies all year long.

Cameron began her career as a model at the age of 16 and worked as such for a few years before she was discovered and cast in the breakout role of Tina Carlyle in The Mask and from there, her career took off.

Vanilla Sky, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Charlie’s Angels and What Happens in Vegas are only a handful of significant film roles Cameron picked up along her journey and you’ll be pleased to learn that all will be airing on APTN this month.

There’s Something About Sundays kicks off with the psychological thriller Vanilla Sky on September 9.

Perhaps Miss Diaz’s specialty, the romantic comedy, My Best Friend’s Wedding will be making its debut on APTN on September 16. My Best Friend’s Wedding is the story of a woman’s realization that she is actually in love with her best friend after he announces that he’s about to marry another woman. Cameron’s character just happens to be the “other woman”.

If it’s a whole lot of action and beautiful women you crave, check out the new spin on a classic TV series where Diaz kicks some serious bad guy bottom as Natalie in Charlie’s Angels on September 23.

And as the saying goes, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”… well that’s exactly what Cameron Diaz’s character in this romantic comedy hopes to happen to her on-a-whim wedding! She stars opposite of the goofy, yet lovable Ashton Kutcher in this film about two complete strangers who get married in Sin City during a night of debauchery and are then forced to live as a couple after winning a jackpot on the other’s quarter.

Cameron Diaz turned 40 on August 30 and APTN celebrates this amateur model turned international sensation’s birthday all month long. Be sure to check your local listings for show times and don’t forget that APTN has many more movies all throughout September. Just go to aptn.ca/movies for a full list of star-studded cinematic satisfaction!
