The Cree Nation of Mistissini and Stornoway Diamond Corporation are set to work together on a new diamond mine on Mistissini traditional territory, ten hours north of Montreal.
Their agreement, called the Mecheshoo Agreement, will see the Crees of Mistissini supply 50% of the workers for the Renard diamond mine. As well, a share of profits from the diamond mine will also go to the First Nation.
It’s being heralded as a new way of working with First Nations, and as APTN National News reporter Danielle Rochette reports, it could bring another boom to an already booming town.
