Show Me The Money or at Least a Good Movie!

Jerry Maguire stars Tom Cruise. Now, this was in 1996, before he was jumping on couches and people were questioning his sanity.
If you’ve ever had someone throw you the famous line, “Show me the money” and you had no idea where it came from well, it’s your lucky day! “Show me the money” is actually delivered by co-star and award-winning actor, Cuba Gooding Jr. “Rod Tidwell” played by Gooding, an NFL football player who uses Jerry Maguire (Cruise) as his agent even after he gets fired.

Maguire breaks down and so does his entire life to the point where he leaves his wife, played by Kelly Preston, who is actually John Travolta’s Missus. The movie was nominated for 5 Academy Awards in the year of its release, one of which Gooding won for best supporting actor. Tidwell isn’t the only athlete to stay with Maguire, though. We have “Slider” himself, Jerry O’Connell who plays up and coming football superstar, Frank Cushman. I really liked the sci-fi 90’s show “Sliders” and may or may not, but definitely did, have a girly crush on O’Connell.
This movie has brought a few phrases into the pop culture mainstream like “show me the money”. There is also “you complete me” and “you had me at hello” which are both exchanged between Jerry Maguire and his new lady love Dorothy, played by Renee Zellweger.
I would like to give this one the stamp of approval to be rated “a classic.” In my books, anyway.
I really appreciated Jerry Maguire’s honesty during his breakdown. I don’t appreciate Kernel’s “help” with my career, though. And, his honesty and suggestions as an agent is a little debatable and worrying. He’s trying to get me into infomercials and I heard him telling someone I might not say no to nudity! This is not the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Well I hope you enjoy our Friday Night Flick starring a more “stable” Tom Cruise.
Let me know what you thought!

Feel free to leave all the comments you want about the movie, the show, or Kernel and I. We’d love to hear your thoughts.

Fun Flick Factoids

Jerry Maguire
Released in 1996

When a sports agent has a moral epiphany and is fired for expressing it, he decides to put his new philosophy to the test as an independent with the only athlete who stays with him.

The title role was written for Tom Hanks.

Directed by Cameron Crowe.

Jann Wenner, who plays the character Scully, is the publisher of Rolling Stone Magazine, for which writer-director Cameron Crowe once worked.

When Jerry is helping Dorothy move, one of the boxes has the game Risk. In Almost Famous (2000), another Cameron Crowe movie, a box Anita’s boyfriend is carrying when he is helping her move also has the game Risk.

Shortly before the movie’s release, Detroit Lions head coach Wayne Fontes was fired. His brief role remained in the film.

This was Tom Cruise’s fifth consecutive $100-million-plus film, at the time this was a new record.
