Desperado
WARNING: This week’s movie is not for the faint of heart.
Desperado (1995) is set somewhere in a small Mexican city, drug addled and crooked. It’s actually the sequel to director Robert Rodriquez’s independent film, “El Mariachi (1992)”. Every turn the story takes us, someone seemingly innocent, ends up being affected and part of the drug trade. There are blood, guts and a whole lot of guns.
Our muscley, manly, El Mariachi – Antonio Banderas – sure plays a great mariachi band member/super-human. He is hell-bent on a path of revenge to avenge the death of the love of his life. His long time friend, Buscemi – played by Steve Buscemi, is along with him for the ride but finds himself in deep water and urges El Mariachi to get out while he’s still breathing.
Along the way, he stumbles upon a local bookstore owner and sexy senorita named Carolina – played by the beautiful Selma Hayek. Not going to give anything away but when they say Mexico is hot in the Summer, it gets hot! If you know what I mean…
Kernel thinks he’s on a path of revenge as well but, quite honestly, there is nothing to be venegeful about in my opinion. I’ve seen cat baskets, trip wire, and home-made traps strewn about this apartment for the past few months and nothing surprises me anymore. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – “I’ve stopped asking questions”. He’s just lucky I haven’t accidentally hurt myself on one of his contraptions. I’d have to go El Mariachi on his fluffy, white behind.
Well, we hope you enjoy Desperado, if you can stomach Rodriguez’s exciting, action-packed, Mexican bloodbath.
See you next Friday, January 14 on APTN’s Friday Night Flick, when we watch Blow – based on the true story of George Jung; a cocaine dealer, played by (our favourite and yours) Johnny Depp.
Thanks for watching!
