Is Hard Ball like get the ball?

You know, this week’s movie makes me want to coach a team. I haven’t ever really played a team sport but I am a very good see-the-ball-get-the-ball player. But really I can coach a team, call me if you have one for me. I’ve been practicing batting and throwing and I’m getting very good. Well, better. If you got money to pay me, I’m there. I could use a few extra bucks. Chantelle is threatening to make me pay for the broken window, the lamp and the washing machine repair. Who knew you shouldn’t wash a baseball bat in the washing machine. Hey maybe the dishwasher! I’ll try that.

Gotta go. See you Friday.

Not exactly The Sweetest Thing

Some may think that this movie looks quite “sweet” indeed. It stars Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate and Selma Blair who are three (usually) sweet women. Well friends, you’re in for a surprise with this one!
This movie may seem like a cutsie-romantic comedy at first glance but it doesn’t take long for someone to figure out that they’re in for some raunchy, over-the-top, zany adventures.

The story follows three successful, youthful, and a little wacky twenty-somethings Christina, Courtney and Jane on their everlasting search for romance. The director and writer of the movie, Nancy Pimental was actually a writer for the animated series “South Park” up until 2002, which is known for it’s over-the-top humour. She has said that the movie is loosely based on her and her friend’s adventures.

I thought the girls’ attitudes and behaviour were fairly accurate to a lot of women this day and age, but Kernel was none too impressed. After a wild night at the night club to cheer up the recently heartbroken Jane (Blair), the ladies meet up and hilarity ensues. Kernel didn’t think the “Penis Song” or the “mystery” stain was very funny though.

But if you think this is just a chick flick, there are a lot of scenes guys would find pretty funny and well, pretty sexy. Once again our Cameron Diaz is dancing up a storm in her panties, but with Christina Applegate joining in.
By the way, you’ll never listen to Aerosmith’s “Never Gonna Miss a Thing” the same again after this one.
Hope you enjoy “The Sweetest Thing” on this week’s Friday Night Flick! Let me know what YOU thought of the movie.

Be sure to join us next week for “Hard Ball” starring APTN favourite, Keanu Reeves.

Thanks again!

How’s this for a chain reaction…?

I went to check out an animal shelter because I was thinking about getting a pet. Possibly something small and cuddly, like a kitten or puppy. I just wanted somebody to keep me company, since I was new in town. Once I was there, and saw all the options, I had to go home to think about it. That’s when I found out that Kernel had stowed away in my car. I brought him in for some food and to call the shelter. I found that it was closed for the weekend. From there we started our new living arrangements and things started getting a little “hairy” – pun intended…I have been experiencing loud noises in the middle of the night, strange smells from “experiments”, and my land lady threatening to evict me ever since… I mean, I might have expected missing shoes from a dog, but not missing money, laptops and credit cards.
He is company though on these long cold evenings. We watch movies, eat popcorn and pizza and laugh a lot! We laugh so much and so often together and that’s the best part. So I guess in the end I did get what I was looking for. It’s not like I can break this chain now… I’m in it for the long haul!
This week’s movie, Chain Reaction (1996) is just a bit different from my experiences, but that doesn’t mean it’s less stressful! Keanu “Neo” Reeves (according to Kernel) is the star of this one. Kernel is pretty adamant that The Matrix is actually a real-life documentary about him. I couldn’t break his heart to tell him any different.
He plays Eddie, an undergraduate that works as a technician at the U of Chicago. He and his team find an alternative to our usual polluting fuel sources. That’s when the action really begins. There are twists are there are turns and there are many of Keanu’s signature action hero looks into the distance. Award-winning actors Rachel Weisz and Morgan Freeman star alongside Keanu in this thriller.
There have been conspiracies regarding clean energy sources all over the world. With our day and age where we are trying to be “greener,” those types of energy sources would be welcomed with open arms. Wouldn’t you say?
Hope you’ll be watching next Friday when we’ll be watching and check out what Kernel had to say about that one!… You can’t miss that.

Take care,

Chantelle.

Fun Flick Factoids

Chain Reaction
Released:  1996

Two researchers in a green alternative energy project are put on the run when they are framed for murder and treason.

Starring:

Keanu Reeves as Eddie Kasalivich
Morgan Freeman as Paul Shannon
Trivia:

Did you know that before the start of filming this movie, Keanu Reeves injured himself playing a pickup game of hockey while visiting his homeland (Canada) . He injured his neck and back areas causing him to gain weight which explains his look in the film.

In the scene where Keanu barely escapes on the motorcycle, did you know that it was shot mainly with blue screens and explosion effects added in post-production. The live sequences had Reeves riding a motorcycle hooked up to the back of truck with a camera filming tight close ups. Interesting!

Hello, My Fellow Americans

As the current president of Canada I can assure you that we will work together with all of the people within the great democratic process to bring forth real and lasting change that will lead this nation into a greater and brighter future! We’ll fight for working families, we’ll reach across party lines, we have to look to the future… okay ya, ya I’m just messing with ya… It’s me Kernel.
I know we don’t REALLY have a President of Canada. But it has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? I got to thinking about it when Chantelle and I started talking about this week’s movie, My Fellow Americans. You should check it.
The movie has some old dudes in it who are kind of cool- and are basically running for their lives. Kind of like me, when I caught a ride with Chantelle to get out of that “spa” I was staying at for a while there last summer. It was getting a little dull. I’d out-played all of the cats with my shark-like card games and they didn’t have any money left for me to win… only catnip and I’m not into that. The dogs were envious of my good looks and witty demeanour so they weren’t very friendly and they didn’t like to share their treats. So anyway, I high-tailed it out of there when Chantelle came by to scope out a new pet. I’m really not the pet type- I’m more of a roomie you know… but I let her scratch me behind the ears every now and then. It makes her happy. Oops gotta go, I can hear Chantelle asking where her laptop is… She doesn’t want me to use it anymore because of the online gambling sites… I don’t see what the big deal is.

See ya Friday.

Watching My Fellow Americans

I finally found my laptop- I don’t know how it got under the bed or where the peanut butter on the keys came from. I have banned Kernel from using my laptop because he was a little too interested in the gambling sites. He sure can be a handful sometimes.
This week we are watching a fun little movie that surprisingly has a lot of action. It’s about two former United States Presidents who are running for their lives from a political assassin. This movie has Kernel thinking about becoming a politician- hopefully he gets bored with it and turns his attention to something else, like badminton. He’s a creative little guy but sometimes I worry about how his mind works. Yesterday I found him cooking up something in the kitchen that he said he was going to use to lure the landlady’s cat with-lure the cat and then what?! I threw his concoction down the drain and then had to call a plumber when the drain pipe disintegrated. Maybe his science experiment has something to do with the movie we’re going to be watching next week; Chain Reaction…?
Keep watching.

Pushing Tin

Before I get started on my weekly Friday Night Flick blog, I would like to take a moment to thank you for tuning in and for visiting the site!
We’re always looking for ways to interact with you so, let us know what you think of our posts/show, how we can improve and/or what you like about it. We’d love to hear your feedback.
If you had a chance to watch last week’s Charlie’s Angels movie, you probably caught Kernel with his… questionable attire. I’m pretty sure he wants to know what you thought about his “look”. Actually, I know he does. He was definitely trying to one-up me that day.
Kernel is pretty good at one-upping me though. Mostly because he has no shame and if he does, it doesn’t show.
Our story this week is a primal game of macho-ism… you know, which guy can do better than the other guy? Then that takes a pretty dramatic turn for the crazies. In Pushing Tin (1999) our main guy Nick, aka John Cusack, finds himself a bit intimidated by the new guy’s expertise in air traffic control. The latest addition to their seemingly tight knit crew is Russell played by Billy Bob Thornton. I don’t blame Nick, because Russell is a pretty intense dude. Behind an intense guy is usually a pretty intense girl. Angelina Jolie, who back then was involved with Billy Bob and did some intense things in real life, plays his wife Mary in the movie.
Well, I don’t want to ruin anything for you. I hope you enjoy it!

Show Me The Money or at Least a Good Movie!

Jerry Maguire stars Tom Cruise. Now, this was in 1996, before he was jumping on couches and people were questioning his sanity.
If you’ve ever had someone throw you the famous line, “Show me the money” and you had no idea where it came from well, it’s your lucky day! “Show me the money” is actually delivered by co-star and award-winning actor, Cuba Gooding Jr. “Rod Tidwell” played by Gooding, an NFL football player who uses Jerry Maguire (Cruise) as his agent even after he gets fired.

Maguire breaks down and so does his entire life to the point where he leaves his wife, played by Kelly Preston, who is actually John Travolta’s Missus. The movie was nominated for 5 Academy Awards in the year of its release, one of which Gooding won for best supporting actor. Tidwell isn’t the only athlete to stay with Maguire, though. We have “Slider” himself, Jerry O’Connell who plays up and coming football superstar, Frank Cushman. I really liked the sci-fi 90’s show “Sliders” and may or may not, but definitely did, have a girly crush on O’Connell.
This movie has brought a few phrases into the pop culture mainstream like “show me the money”. There is also “you complete me” and “you had me at hello” which are both exchanged between Jerry Maguire and his new lady love Dorothy, played by Renee Zellweger.
I would like to give this one the stamp of approval to be rated “a classic.” In my books, anyway.
I really appreciated Jerry Maguire’s honesty during his breakdown. I don’t appreciate Kernel’s “help” with my career, though. And, his honesty and suggestions as an agent is a little debatable and worrying. He’s trying to get me into infomercials and I heard him telling someone I might not say no to nudity! This is not the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Well I hope you enjoy our Friday Night Flick starring a more “stable” Tom Cruise.
Let me know what you thought!

Feel free to leave all the comments you want about the movie, the show, or Kernel and I. We’d love to hear your thoughts.
Be sure to tune in for some female action heroes in Charlie’s Angels next week!
