Hey there, it’s Chantelle here with your weekly Friday Night Flick blog update!
This week Kernel and I are watching Poltergeist 2: The Other Side (1986) on APTN. Thanks for joining us!
Now, I’m going to start by saying that this movie couldn’t come at a better time now that I’m much more educated in ghosts and ghost stories. I’ve always loved reading these stories as a kid and decided I would pick it up again as an adult. Maybe I just like scaring the bejeebers out of myself still. I have a 600+ page book about all different types of entities and psychic occurrences.
The word poltergeist comes from the German words poltern (“to make noise”) and Geist (“spirit”), and the term itself literally means “noisy ghost” but after reading up on the phenomenon, it is theorized as psychic energy emanating from an adolescent, usually a female. Hmm, I think I’m seeing something here…
The movie surrounds a young family named the Freelings who have just moved to a new neighbourhood after their old house…Umm, disappeared into thin air!! The man of the house is the “Coach” himself, Craig T. Nelson aka Steve Freeling. His daughter Carol Anne is the one being pursued by supernatural forces to bring her to “The Other Side.”
She’s played by the adorable Heather O’Rourke, who sadly passed away in 1988, the year that Poltergeist 3 was released.
The entity named “Kane” is probably one of the creepiest bad dudes I’ve had the displeasure to watch. Especially with the singing!
Now that we’re on the subject of creepy, Kernel has been acting really strangely lately. He’s been looming in dark corners, hiding under my bed and singing even weirder songs than usual. Wait… I better go check those corners I saw him lurking in…
They say women are more likely than men to believe in ghosts. Do you believe in ghosts or ever encounter a possible entity? Please share! I just love ghost stories.
After all the craziness in the movie, you have to stick around for the end. Just before the credits roll the best part, in my opinion, happens.
It involves the Aboriginal man named Taylor sent to help the Freelings. I think I laughed for about 5 minutes straight, wondering what the HECK just happened?!
I hope you can join us again Friday, May 6 for Jerry Maguire!
Enjoy !
