Millions of dollars were announced for Canada’s First Nations people in the 2012 federal budget last week.
The federal government has committed $275 million over three years for First Nations education, and $330.8 million over two years to build and renovate water infrastructure on reserves. As well, the Conservatives used the 2012 budget to announce that they will move towards privatizing land on reserves.
In all, Aboriginal Affairs received a cut of only 2.7% of funding, compared to the 5% or 10% that was expected.
